VIRUS - MALWARE NEWS & UPDATES

Ok, 5 critical and 3 important updates have been released from Microsoft. (from MS08-018 to MS08-025). It's time to start updating your system if you haven't done it yet.

Critical updates affect these components: Microsoft Project, GDI, VBScript and JScript scripting engines, updated ActiveX Kill Bits and Internet Explorer.

On the other hand, DNS Client, Windows Kernel and MIcrosoft Visio are patched with important updates.

Most of them allow remote code execution, so don't forget to update your system asap.

Among the thousands of malicious codes that have appeared this week, I am going to focuses on the Bankolimb.AF Trojan and the Autorun.RS worm.

When it is run, Autorun.RS releases two files on the computer designed to steal passwords for online games. The use of worms that can steal passwords, a feature more often associated with Trojans, is a growing trend.

The reason is that worms, unlike Trojans, can spread by themselves, which represents a real advantage for cyber-crooks. Theft of passwords for online games is motivated by the potential financial returns that this can generate.

In these games, there are levels and items that can only be achieved through skill and experience.

However, many users are willing to pay for them on forums, web pages, etc. Cyber-crooks readily profit from this situation. The Bankolimb.AF Trojan drops several libraries on the computer, one of which is registered as a BHO (Browser Helper Object).

This allows it to monitor the Internet activity of the user, monitoring when they access online bank pages, and adding fields to forms that users see on these pages, in order to collect additional information.

The Trojan captures keystrokes to steal passwords entered into these pages. It then sends the information to its creator, uploading a file with the data to a server.

Regarding malware, Trojans continue being the most relevant category of malware, at 62.16%.

The well-known Storm Worm attack, which infected thousands of computers worldwide, is still active. That̢۪s why it is worth mentioning.

Nowadays, the use of Web 2.0 services is very widespread, being the social networks one of the most extended services. The wider and more active a social network is, the higher the possibilities are of malware spreading on the network and reaching a high infection rate.

As usual, every second Tuesday Microsoft published security updates for its products. On 11th March, Microsoft published four updates (from MS08-014 to MS08-017), all of them rated as critical and affecting Microsoft Office suite.

We recommend you to update your systems as soon as possible, as all these flaws could allow remote code execution to be run.
